Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a malignant disease that occurs in lung tissue. Left lung is smaller because the heart takes up more space on this side of the body. The lungs bring air in and out of the body. They take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide (respiratory residual substance).

Lining around the lungs called the pleura, helps protect the lungs and allows them to move during breathing. The windpipe (trachea) brings air into the lungs. The trachea divides into tubes called bronchi, which are then subdivided into smaller branches called bronkiol. At the end of these small branches are tiny air sacs called alveoli.

In the lungs, there is muscle called the diaphragm that separates the chest from the abdomen (abdomen). When you breathe, the diaphragm moves up and down, forcing air in and out of the lungs.
